Kid-Friendly DC Events This Weekend





There are lots of DC events this holiday season that you can do with your children. There are some events that require ticketing, and others that you can attend for free. Here are some suggestions to help you get started.

Washington Waldorf School has been hosting its annual holiday market since 2019. The holiday market is family-friendly and offers plenty of fun activities for all ages. There will be craft and DIY projects, entertainment, and tasty treats for the kids. Local artisans also make a wide range of unique crafts. It's free to enter the market, and there are some great photo ops. There are also unique holiday gifts that you can shop for. There will even be s'mores goodies for sale at the market.

The Capitol Tree Lighting is an annual event that takes places every night from December 1-January 1. There are many fun activities and it's completely free. You'll also get to see Washington landmarks adorned with Christmas trees. You can also see the Jolly Man perform live on a firetruck.




You can get free admission to the National Building Museum's exhibits by becoming a member of The National Museum. You can also sign up for a preview invite and receive tickets to some special events. Special offers are available for tickets and packages to The Nutcracker Holiday Show.


Christkindlmarkt (German-style holiday crafts market) is located near Dupont Circle. The market supports local artisans and craftspeople, and includes over 50 small-scale sellers. There will also be a mini-exhibit that focuses on the history of Chr. Heurich's Senate Beer. There is also live music and ornament-making for children. Open on selected dates in November, December and January, the event is free and open to all.

ZooLights is a FREE holiday light display that features thousands of environmentally-friendly lights, live music, and shopping opportunities. There will be animal lanterns, tasty winter treats, and even animal lanterns. The DC Department of Transportation will sponsor the event. Live steam demonstrations will also be held at the Washington, Virginia and Maryland Museum of Transportation. You'll also have the chance to see the historic train display at the National Garden, which always features an outdoor holiday exhibit.

The National Building Museum also has a holiday exhibit, which is free to see. The museum also offers tickets for select workshops and shows at no cost. You can also purchase memberships that include invitations to preview events and advanced camp registration.




For those interested in spy history, the International Spy Museum makes a great gift. It is located in Washington DC and features many unique exhibits and activities. Children 5 years and over can purchase tickets for the show.

MLK Library houses a large auditorium as well as a cafe, study spaces, a child's slide and recording studio. There is also a rooftop terrace. There are also teen art opportunities and back-to-school kits for kids.

The key is finding something that works well for your group. Basketball, soccer, hockey, and baseball -- are all great options for families to spend time together.
  5. Watch a Movie Under the Stars - If you've got a big backyard, this may be one of the easiest ways to enjoy the outdoors.
