Summer Camp Ideas





Summer camps offer children the opportunity to have new experiences, learn life skills, and develop a sense for themselves. To measure the social-motivational climate at summer camp, the Motivational Climate Observation Tool for Physical Activity was created. This tool allows students to contribute to the assessment and measures both mastery-focused activity opportunities as well as the social-motivational environment of staff. The researchers used this observation method to assess the social-motivational climate at four youth recreational summer camps in the greater Columbia region of South Carolina.

Results showed that the median number of MVPA minutes accumulated by boys and girls were similar, with a median of 96 and 80 minutes per day, respectively. The motivation for girls' PA time was peer support and social support. However, the motivation for male PA time was ego orientation.


The majority of autonomous play instances were found in unstructured play, according to observations. Additionally, most activities were highly engaging. Only 24% of scans showed minimal organized activity.

Camp 2 had a smaller gymnasium than the other camps. This made coordinating activities more difficult. It offered more organized activities, and was able to efficiently allocate space.
