For the purpose of evaluating the social-motivational climate within the summer camps, two teams of coders monitored daily activities for four consecutive days. This was done over a period of two weeks. In order to track the amount of MVPA accumulation over time, 20 children were given accelerometers.

Results showed that the median number of MVPA minutes accumulated by boys and girls were similar, with a median of 96 and 80 minutes per day, respectively. Girls' time in PA was driven by peer relations and social support, whereas males' time in PA was driven by ego orientation.


Observations also showed that most of the autonomous instances of play occurred in free play. Additionally, most activities were highly engaging. Only 24% of scans showed minimal organized activity.

Camp 2's gymnasium was smaller than other camps. This made it difficult to accommodate all campers in any given activity. The camp offered more organized activities and had more space.




The majority of youth stayed in the program for the entire day. The camp's physical environment was ideal for outdoor recreation. Moreover, all the camps were located within 10-miles of an urban center, or a suburban area.

Finally, the group had low levels of gender diversity. In particular, there were three groups: girls, boys, and mixed. However, the ego orientations of females were significantly higher than those in the other two categories. Therefore, the girls had a higher level of task orientation which indicates that they were more likely be involved in PA.

The results of this study suggest that summer camps can enhance children's physical activity and promote the development of a healthy lifestyle.
