FAQ

Why is family gardening important

Family gardeners love to grow food for their family.

Children learn responsibility from their family gardens. This helps them develop patience, cooperation time management and problem solving skills. Gardening also helps parents develop confidence and self-esteem and teaches them how to care for the environment.

People who live in gardens may feel more connected with nature and have a better quality of life. Our brains release "happy hormones", which make us happier and more healthy when we are outdoors.

Family gardening provides many benefits, beyond just physical and mental health. Gardens are a way to give back to society, by conserving natural resources and reducing stormwater runoff. They also filter pollutants and create wildlife habitats.

What are the 5 best outdoor activities for kids?

You can find endless outdoor activities no matter where your home is located. These are five activities that every kid should try at least once.

  1. Go to the Zoo - Zoos are wonderful places for quality family time. A visit to the zoo allows you to interact with the animals up close, and it also gives you an opportunity to educate your children about conservation and animal welfare. Some zoos offer special programs that help educate visitors about issues facing endangered species worldwide. Online information is available. You can also call ahead to inquire about classes and events at your local Zoo.
  2. Visit a Nature Center. These are great places to learn more about the natural environment. There are usually exhibits, interactive displays, and lots of hands-on activities. It's amazing what kids can do with all of the cool stuff! A visit to a nature center can be a great excuse for a hike in nearby forests or parks.
  3. Take your kids on a bicycle ride. They will be just as happy riding bikes today as they were growing up. Bike riding isn’t just great exercise. It’s also a great way for you to get to see your community and discover hidden gems.
  4. Play a Sports Game. Sports games don't only appeal to kids who grew-up playing them. Sports games have continued to be popular for all ages. Find something that is suitable for your group. Family time can be spent together in many ways, including basketball, soccer and hockey.
  5. View a Movie under the Stars. If you have a big yard, this is one of the most enjoyable ways to enjoy the outdoors. You will need a blanket, lawn chair, picnic basket, food and drinks, as well as a grill. It's so relaxing to be outside under the stars! Grab your blankets and get out there.

What age should my child be to go outside with me?

Children need sunshine and fresh air every single day. Your children, whether they are toddlers or preschoolers, need to be exposed to the sun every day.

Try to limit your exposure to snow if you live somewhere cold. Make sure your children have sun protection and hats when they go outside, especially if they are young.

Children under five years of age should spend no more than 10 minutes outdoors at a stretch. You can increase this time limit until you are able to spend at least two hours a day.

How can I determine if my child is ready for a ride on a bike?

Before attempting to pedal a bike, children who are learning to walk should practice balance. Begin by getting your child up on one leg and gradually increasing the length of her legs. Once she has mastered this task, she should try standing on both feet simultaneously.

Children who can walk should be able ride a tricycle or scooter. Ask your pediatrician about special equipment that your child may need to be safe.

If your child is four years or older, you may be ready to teach him/her how to ride a bicycle. Start by teaching your child to balance using two wheels. Then teach your child how to steer using hand signals. Next, teach your child to brake safely.

Safety should always be your priority no matter their age. Your children should learn to look both ways when crossing roads and to wear helmets when riding a bicycle.

What other activities are you able to do with your family that are enjoyable?

There are many different ways you can spend your time with your loved ones. But there are two types of activities you should avoid. The first involves talking about yourself while spending time with others. This activity is usually ended when the conversation ends.

You can also argue about how you are better than everyone else. Doing this will make your spouse feel worse and can even cause you to hurt your children.

You may say, "Well, we have to have these arguments." That's right. We do. Sometimes we find more productive ways of spending our time. For example, you could play games with your kids, read books, go for walks, help them with homework, cook dinner, etc. These activities involve your whole family working together.

Instead of debating who is smarter than the other, why not agree that we will compete against each in a competition? You could also choose a book everyone likes and share it with the group.

Why not take some time to go to a movie together? Have dinner and talk about how you did today. Play board games!

These activities are fun and provide a way for you to have fun without having to fight. They also allow you to learn new things from each other.
